HIMSS25 has highlighted the use of AI in EHRs

  • July 31, 2025

At HIMSS25 in Las Vegas, industry leaders highlighted how AI-powered electronic health record (EHR) systems are helping hospitals reduce billing delays and administrative burdens.

Vendors like Epic, Oracle, Meditech, and InterSystems showcased new tools using artificial intelligence to automate medical coding, improve documentation, and speed up the revenue cycle. One notable launch was InterSystems’ IntelliCare platform, which uses AI to pre-populate billing codes based on patient records, helping hospitals avoid errors and accelerate reimbursements. Fierce Healthcare reported that IntelliCare is now used in over 500 hospitals across 29 countries.

In an interview with HIMSS TV, Sandra Johnson of CliniComp explained how their built-in AI tracks clinical documentation in real time, helping healthcare staff generate charge-ready records before the patient even leaves the office. This directly improves the speed of billing and collections.

According to Healthcare Dive, Epic, used by over 3,100 U.S. hospitals, has already rolled out generative AI tools to two-thirds of its customer base. These tools assist in writing physician notes, summarizing charts, and flagging missing billing details, ensuring greater billing accuracy.

AI is also making headway in behavioral health. As noted by Commure, the use of AI-assisted coding and ambient documentation tools has led to more complete data capture and fewer claim denials, especially when used in partnership with platforms like MEDITECH.

Conclusion

AI in EHRs is no longer theoretical. At HIMSS25, healthcare IT leaders made it clear: billing workflows are being transformed. From pre-coding to real-time documentation, artificial intelligence is now a trusted partner in improving billing speed, accuracy, and revenue capture.
